Pre-Prosthetic Surgery

The preparing of your mouth before the placement of a prosthesis is called pre-prosthetic surgery.

Some patients need minor oral surgical procedures prior to getting a partial or complete denture, to guarantee the maximum comfort. A denture sits on the bone ridge, so it is extremely important the bone is the proper size and shape. If a tooth needs to be extracted, the actual bone may be left sharp and uneven. For top fit of the denture, the bone might need to be smoothed out or reshaped. Occasionally, excess bone would need to be removed prior to denture insertion.

A number of the following procedures may need to be performed in order to ready your mouth for any denture:

  • Bone smoothing and reshaping Elimination of excess bone Bone ridge reduction
  • Elimination of excess gum tissue Exposure of impacted teeth

We will review your particular needs with you during your appointment.
